Chapter 14: It Will Rain

It was Tuesday. I chose my clothes carefully: the red lacy Victoria’s Secret bra and matching thong underwear I’d just purchased, jeans, and casual blue blouse with sandals. I washed and conditioned my hair, took extra time putting on my makeup, and threw a clean pair of underwear, a powder compact, and mascara in my purse for later. I plugged my iPod into the car stereo and listened to Bruno Mars as I drove to LAX to pick up Matt. It Will Rain had been my favorite Bruno song for months but today, as I drove to the airport, the part about how nothing could “save me”—no religion, no amount of prayer—seemed to burrow into my heart.

I was way too far gone for saving and I knew it. I’d walked down this path that I knew was wrong and nothing could change that, nothing. I didn’t even know if I wanted to be saved. I thought about the decision I’d made ten days ago: this affair was happening. And it dawned on me how many smaller decisions grew out of that—whether or not to pick Matt up, how much time to spend with him, what days we’d meet—decision after decision, each one an opportunity to make a different choice. Even now, I could pull away from the curb and drive off—I could leave and not go through with this. I sat in my car, eyes glued to the doors, mulling over my options, when I saw Matt stroll through the sliding glass doors pulling a black weekender and carrying a laptop in a messenger bag under his shoulder. I watched as he scanned the curb. His eyes lit up when he spotted me.

“Hey,” he said, as he got into the car and slid his arm around my waist. He closed the door before he leaned over and kissed me full on the mouth. The feel of his soft lips and the scent of his skin made me edgy. I checked the rearview mirror and merged into the oncoming traffic exiting the airport.

“I was afraid you might not be here,” he confessed.

“The thought did cross my mind...”

“And?”

“This isn’t New York, Matt. L.A. taxi service sucks.”

He laughed and his face lit up as he reached over and grabbed my hand. I found myself smiling too. The 405 was jammed so we had plenty of time to talk as we crawled toward the hotel. He told me about the action comedy he was working on. It was about two out-of-work actors who inadvertently got involved in a bank heist. As he described the convoluted storyline and the complexity of the crash scenes, he joked about the on-set antics of the cast and crew and made me laugh with his descriptions of the action stunts.

“There’s nothing Hollywood likes better than a ‘sure thing’ and big action films draw an audience. That’s why everything today feels like a sequel.”

“Well, that’s how you get those mega-budgets, right? I read the Entertainment section.”

He shook his head and chuckled.
